Considering Matthew Shepard
A Concert to Commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Kidnapping and Murder of Matthew Shepard on October 6, 1998
Dakota Pro Musica presents a special "Building Community" concert event, "Considering Matthew Shepard" in three concert performances: October 5 in Minot, October 6 in Bismarck, and October 8 in Bemidji as guest artists with the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra. "Considering Matthew Shepard" is a 90-minute concert musical which uses diary entries, news reports, and police reports to tell the story of Matthew Shepard, an LGBTQA+ student at the University of Wyoming who was kidnapped, beaten, and left to die on a fence in rural Wyoming on October 6, 1998. This Grammy Nominated composition is not just a sad retelling of his story, but a call for the audience and our community to find ways to love and respect each other, no matter who we are and what we believe. The piece ultimately ends with hopefulness for a brighter future.
We are excited to share that many churches, community organizations, and regional organizations are endorsing and supporting our concert. We will be having a Community Information Fair before and after our concert on October 6th at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bismarck where our many partnering organizations will be sharing their outreach and businesses, especially for the LGBTQA+ community.
